As a dog photographer who specializes in creating custom photography experiences, I understand the importance of preparing your dog for an on-location photo shoot. As part of your session, we will plan all of these things together during your session planning consult, but to give you an idea of what to expect, here are some helpful tips for your session. Follow these tips to ensure a successful and enjoyable session that will result in stunning images you'll cherish forever.
-
Grooming and Pampering: Before the big day, give your dog a good grooming session. A clean and well-brushed coat will not only make your pup look fabulous but will also enhance the overall aesthetic of the photos. Trim any unruly fur around the eyes, ears, and paws for a polished look. I do not recommend to schedule a grooming appointment the day of your session, but a few days prior is ideal.
-
Familiarize Your Dog with the Camera: Dogs can sometimes be curious or nervous around cameras, so if your up for it, Alow your dog to sniff and investigate the camera and any equipment you plan to use. Use positive reinforcement, treats, and praise to create a positive association with the camera, making it a fun experience.
-
Practice Basic Commands: First off, don't panic if you're dog does not know any commands. MOST of the dogs I photograph do not have any formal training. But if they do know basic obedience or need a refresher, now would be a great time prior to your shoot. BUT again, don't worry if they dont. It is absolutely not necessary for your session.
-
Choose the Right Location: We'll talk about this in your planning session, but selecting the right location is crucial for a successful dog photo shoot. Pick a place where your dog feels comfortable and relaxed, whether it's a familiar park, your backyard, or a favorite spot. A comfortable environment will bring out your dog's natural charm and personality in the photos. I promise we will find just the right spot for them to thrive and have a very successful photo session.
-
Bring Favorite Toys and Treats: Pack a few of your dog's favorite toys and treats to keep their attention and enthusiasm high during the session. Squeaky toys or treats can be excellent tools for capturing those adorable expressions and ensuring your dog stays engaged throughout the shoot. NOTE: There is a big difference between treat motivated and treat obsessed. If your dog is treat obsessed, still bring treats, let's just keep them hidden until we absolutely must have them.
-
Timing is Everything: Consider your dog's schedule when planning the photo shoot. Choose a time when your dog is typically well-rested and has had some exercise. A tired dog is more likely to be calm and cooperative, leading to better photo opportunities, but you don't want them exhausted either. If they are food motivated, leaving them a little hungry might be a good ideas as well.
-
Stay Relaxed and Patient: Dogs are highly intuitive and can pick up on their owner's emotions. If you're calm and relaxed, your dog is more likely to be at ease during the photo shoot. Be patient, and allow breaks if needed to prevent any stress for your pup!
Preparing your dog for a photo shoot is a collaborative effort that involves grooming, positive reinforcement, and creating a comfortable environment. By following these tips, you'll set the stage for a delightful and memorable experience that results in captivating photographs of your beloved canine companion. Get ready to capture those tail-wagging moments that will be cherished for a lifetime!
